In the middle of June we were asked to contribute to GQ's Ten Essentials column. We enjoyed the opportunity and are glad to share the content and images before GQ's edit.
Hollister Ranch, Central California
We are related to the original Hollister family and grew up learning how to surf along the undeveloped 8 miles of coast between Gaviota State Park and Point Conception just north of Santa Barbara. This untouched California 14,000 acre countryside and is divided into 100 acre parcels for private land holding of nearly eighty homes, a handful of cattle stables, unending riding trails, and 3 cabañas (showers, sinks, BBQ, lawn, and picnic tables). This limited-access cattle ranch positions Hollister Ranch as a legendary, old-world time machine, but also, a modern day country club for surfers.

BR03-92 Military Ceramic by Bell & Ross
In June 2010, we finally sat down for a meal with Bell & Ross co-founder Carlos Rosillo. Ever since our father introduced the brand to us we have been impressed with its timeless branding and calculated, utilitarian styling - with Bruno Belamich's background as an aircraft instrument designer. Getting to hear the personal story of Bell & Ross first-hand from Carlos exceeded our expectations, and we are thankful for Rosillo’s friendship. The BR03-92 Military Ceramic is the first watch to successfully incorporate indestructible ceramic into a full size watch and utilizes a tinted crystal to eliminate any glare for a military tactical unit to remain unnoticed; so legit.
Our global community of friends and family has shaped who we are. We are blessed by a network of heroes, mentors and close friends that continue to push us forward and remind us what is most important. It is hard to say where we would be today without each of them.
Cap-Toe Demi-Boot by Sid Mashburn
Sid Mashburn's authentic interest in others and effortless style has been very influential to us. Our friendship started over seasonally sharing our collection, and has now evolved into a mentorship. Knowing how much thought goes into everything that Sid puts his name on, when he told us he was making the Cap-Toe Demi-Boot, we knew that we had to make it a part of our daily wares. Our expectations, as usual, have been surpassed.

Frisee and Lardons Salad, Joseph Leonard Restaurant, New York
As we are frequently working on the east coast, it is always great to share our favorite New York eatery with old and new friends. Our Wisconsin friends introduced us to the seasonal American restaurant and bar, Joseph Leonard, in the West Village. Our favorite afternoon go-to continues to be the Frisee and Lardons salad.

Chambray Swim Trunk, Apolis + Katin
A key essential in the Parton family for lazy days or a warm summer surf. We have always been drawn to the "hand-crafted" process behind American manufacturing. Kanvas by Katin is an iconic fifty year-old example of Californian craftsmanship. Growing up surfing, our father gave us our first pair of Katin trunks, telling us we would never need another. The longevity of our original pair inspired our collaboration with Kanvas by Katin.

Uncharitable by Dan Pallotta
While speaking on a panel in Washington DC, we met Dan Pallotta, the author of Uncharitable. Pallotta's book quickly become our manifesto as he eloquently summarizes how restraints on non-profits undermine their potential. We cite it regularly to provide comprehensive understanding to why Apolis empowers people through opportunity instead of charity. Read Journal Entry: Dan Pallotta, May 24, 2010.
Philanthropist Briefcase, Apolis + Filson
During the development and release of our Philanthropist Briefcase, we learned timeless lessons in craftsmanship and of the lasting characteristics necessary in maintaining brand integrity. Our friendship with the C.C. Filson team is one we do not take for granted, and always appreciate their open invitation to the annual barbecue in Seattle, WA.

Rapha's Grand Tour Gloves
Our love for cycling literally reached new heights after filming a trip of a lifetime to the Himalayas with one of Rapha's Continental team riders, Cole Maness. After enjoying a recent visit to our only New York retailer, the Rapha Cycle Club, we are continuing to find more reasons to love the sport and have a hard time leaving home without Rapha's Grand Tour Gloves, hand crafted in England with a goatskin leather, a golden essential to our cycling kit.
1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
When we first received our driver's license, it was a right of passage to spend at least a year at the helm of our family's 1989 Jeep Wagoner. It continues to be a Parton family trophy that our father has restored countless times. Today, with 200,000 miles of character, the Wagonner remains in Santa Babara as a timeless weekend mode of transportation.
1974 Edition, The Whole Earth Catalog
The ‘Whole Earth Catalog’ is a dated publication that Steve Jobs made well-known during a commencement speech in 2005. The farewell message placed on the back cover of the 1974 edition of the catalog has always held a special place in our hearts, “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.”
