We met Dave and his wife Janelle a year ago through a mutual friend, and when we received the news that they would be moving to Los Angeles from Denver, we were thrilled about their addition to our already vibrant community. Born in 1984, Dave has always been a natural musician. His mother, an elementary school teacher, and his father, also a musician, cultivated a dedicated work ethic in Dave, leading him to understand that "excellence comes at a cost."
This sentiment carried over into Dave's early adulthood, and during a visit to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Dave decided that instead of sitting in a classroom, he would rather dedicate himself to a band with his neighborhood friends. This decision led to the formation of The Fray in 2002, and to the release of the group's first album in 2005. The album has gone 2x platinum in the US and 1x platinum in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK; however, despite the albums success and excellence, we continue to joke with Dave, asking him if he's "saved a life" whenever possible.
For Dave, an average day of work consists of twelve hour stretches in the band's studio. "Work" days are not only about writing hit songs though, for as Issac Joe, Ben, and Dave have stated - "the art, aesthetic, and progression of [our] music is fundamental, yet it seemingly isn't paramount. Art needs to be integrated with other human elements; it needs to have a soul." This is probably the reason why most of our conversation with Dave warmly revolve around our shared love for dry humor, food, and family.
We are glad to have the Welshs in Los Angeles, and value the hard work and merited success of The Fray. Excited to share a few images from the Welsh's home, 1,300 sq. ft., in Silverlake.
