Recently I joined a group of family and friends going to The Getty Center, off of the 405 freeway in Brentwood, overlooking Los Angeles and the surrounding community. The Getty continues to be a gift to have in our own backyard and one of only two museums in the US (the other is the Smithsonian) that are free to the public. Often likened to Howard Roark, Ayn Rand's protagonist in The Fountainhead, Pritzker Prize-winning rationalist architect Richard Meier spared no expense in creating an architectural landmark for California. During the 13 year process, Meier spent $1.3 billion on the 24 acre campus which houses some of the most coveted works of art in the world and sees roughly 1.3 million visitors each year.
Whether your interests lie in art, architecture, or culture, a trip to the Getty will serve you well. Be sure to include an architecture tour with our favorite docent, Chuck Tellalian. Our photos below only begin to scratch the surface of the stunning structure of the space, but we hope they'll convince you to check it out if you haven't already.
