We are privileged to release the Apolis + Pitkin County Dry Goods Aspen Market Bag, exclusively sold at Pitkin County Dry Goods in Aspen, Colorado. This is our 29th Local + Global project, connecting regional retailers with our global advocacy and helping to create consistent employment for artisans in rural Bangladesh.
Aspen is one of the great vacation spots in the world. It is famous for its skiing, with four world class mountains, but has equally spectacular summers allowing for great hiking, biking, fishing, and rock climbing. It is home to both the Winter X Games and the Food & Wine Classic, and boasts world-renowned classical music and restaurants. Set in a 19th century Victorian era mining town, it frequently attracts politicians, scientists, journalists, and athletes under the shadow of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The downtown is intimate yet cosmopolitan, and only five minutes away from the remote wilderness.
Pitkin County Dry Goods (PCDG) is Aspen’s oldest retail store under continuous ownership, opening up on July 4, 1969 as a modern, early 1970’s boutique. Among innovative ideas that first year, PCDG offered modified Frye boots with vibram soles, hand-crafter leather belts, custom-made floral shirts, and in-house haircuts by Bernie, Aspen’s first men’s hairstylist. Owner David Fleisher has run Pitkin County Dry Goods continuously since 1970. In 1971, David hired his future wife and co-owner, Gina Berko, for a summer job. She joined the business permanently after graduating from college a few years later. Today, PCDG continues as a multi-brand, contemporary clothing store for men and women, with a devoted following of local, national, and international customers. PCDG has also become an Aspen institution offering friendly, gregarious and knowledgeable customer service.
The owners of PCDG decided to become a Local + Global partner because they felt the Apolis market bag is not only functional and well designed, but is also making a global impact. We are proud to welcome Pitkin County Dry Goods as our 29th Local + Global Partner.
