Every time we return from business on the East Coast, we find ourselves sharing our favorite New York eatery with our friends and family. Our close friends from Wisconsin introduced us to this seasonal American restaurant and bar, Joseph Leonard, in the West Village. While we could go on at length about our afternoon to-go entree (the Frisee and Lardons salad), we feel privileged to be able to introduce you instead to Gabriel Stulman, chief proprietor of Joseph Leonard.

Gabriel was born in Washington DC, and grew up in Fairfax Station, Virgina. The second of three siblings, Gabriel’s parents taught him the value of the dollar, hard work, determination, and to not take anything for granted. His first “job” started in elementary school, when he would buy candy in bulk from Sam’s Club and sell it to his peers. These lessons followed him through college, where he bartended to pay for his own tuition. Now, at just 28 years young, Gabriel has already been instrumental in the opening of three businesses (including Joseph Leonard), and he has two more in the works – a grocery store/luncheonette/oyster bar, and a supper-club/bar – both in Manhattan.

Gabriel’s many projects wake him up at 7am each day. He then spends the entire day immersed in Joseph Leonard and his other works-in-progress until going to bed, usually at 1am. We are always excited to be part of Gabriel’s busy schedule, and look forward to his future projects, which are sure to become valuable additions to New York City.
