My brothers and I have grown up surfing Hollister Ranch, the undeveloped 8.5 miles of coast between Gaviota State Park and Point Conception. This untouched California countryside is 14,000 acres and is divided into 100 acre parcels for a private land holding of nearly eighty homes, a handful of cattle stables, unending riding trails, and 3 cabañas (showers, sinks, BBQ, lawn, and picnic tables). This limited access cattle ranch puts Hollister Ranch at legendary status as an old world time machine and a modern day country club for surfers.
Last week friends and family forced Shea Foley and I out of the office for a re-charge and we couldn’t think of a better place than the Ranch. We filled eight days with a new retro surfboard, reading Marcus Latrell’s Lone Survivor, 4WD beach cruising, non stop barbequing, endless rounds of horse shoes, twelve gauge shooting practice, burning mountain bike breaks, daily jump starting our generator for electricity, ten foot stand up paddle boards, no shaving, and no schedule. After a simple week we are reminded how important it is to keep life in perspective.
