We started working with Handsome Coffee Roasters in January 2012 to team up for our Honduras Expedition. After that memorable trip we began our Honduras Coffee Project partnership to create our Co-Op Roast. Recently we were able to spend some time with Handsome Coffee proprietor and the maniac behind their marketing, Tyler Wells, who gave us a quick update while we walked the few blocks from Apolis: Common Gallery to Handsome's flagship cafe.
It was fun to hear about where Tyler was raised 35 years ago in the hills of West Virginia. He's explored various trades through his many jobs—fixing Audis, running a bike messenger business, slinging hot dogs and cold beer. But it was his love for coffee that tamed his wild spirit in 2005, bringing out the hospitable gentleman you would meet today. Coffee led Tyler to work at Frank in Austin, Texas, where he served Intelligentsia Coffee so well that Intelligentsia brought him in to open its new shop in Pasadena, California.
Since February 2012, Tyler and the incredible team at Handsome have focused their energy on fostering hospitality, accessiblity, and uncompromising quality. Tyler's goal with Handsome are to see the business grow and to provide a path and venue for team members to grow from barista, to manager, to director, and beyond, as the company continues it's current exponential growth.
It was a pleasure to catch up with Tyler, talk about coffee & laugh about our mutual love for living and working in the Arts District. Next time you're in downtown Los Angeles or near one of their many wholesale partners, stop by and taste a great cup of coffee, freshly roasted in our neighborhood.
