Starting on National Wine Day, Apolis will release their customizable and ethically handcrafted wine tote – it’s limited edition and only available for one week. $5 from every Apolis bag sold will be donated to charity: water. Our goal is to raise over $75,000, and we need your help! charity: water will use 100% of the money we donate towards bringing clean and safe drinking water to communities in need. Yep, 100% of it (they have a separate fundraising model for their staff and overhead). Learn more about our relationship with charity: water here.
The water project we’re funding is focused on Nepal, in a hilly region where women walk up to two hours to collect water for their families and cattle every day. We’re going to create at least 63 piped systems that will serve at least 630 people! This is a huge deal. Clean water changes everything. Access to clean water improves health, gives kids an opportunity to go to school, and gives women more time to earn an income. Clean water means better futures for families around the world.
This water project will be complete in 21 months. Thanks to charity: water's insane attention to detail and desire to help you and I track every dollar, if you purchase a bag between May 25 and June 2, you'll receive an email from Apolis by Spring 2021 which will share images and GPS coordinates of our water project — so you can see the impact for yourself! Isn’t that amazing?
Well, simply put, our bags are made at a specific co-op in Bangladesh that is committed to providing Fair Trade wages, annual profit dividends, and a retirement fund to 145+ mothers — which means that quantities are often limited. We're currently in the process of expanding our production capabilities, but we're committed to doing so in a way that doesn't put pressure on these factories to cut corners in quality or ethical sourcing — though that means we can't offer all our bags at all times of the year.
The bag is 15.5" wide, 13" high, 6" deep, with 2 interior wine bottle (or any kind of bottle!) pockets and an additional 7" x 5" inside pocket. It has 11" straps reinforced by antique nickel rivets, allowing the bag to hold well over pounds. Plus, the interior is water-resistant, making it easy to wipe clean if a spill should happen.
The bag costs $78 USD, which you can also pay it in four biweekly installments of $19.50 USD each through Afterpay (with no interest if paid within that time). You can read details on Afterpay here.
The $78 cost reflects not just the customizable printed phrase of your choice, Fair Trade-certified wages and profit dividends for the women who make the bag, but a bag that is built to be durable and reliable for the long haul! Plus, $5 from every bag purchased (not just the tote, but every Apolis bag) during this campaign, from May 25 – June 2, goes to charity: water to provide clean and safe drinking water to communities in need.
More details on the bag:
Every bag is handcrafted in Bangladesh by mothers who receive Fair Trade-certified wages, annual profit dividends, and a retirement fund; read Forbes.com's article on how this approach is changing people's lives, with 500,000 bag owners and counting. The bags are then shipped to Los Angeles, California, where a growing team of 13 people print one-of-a-kind customizations onto the bag.
